These abandoned children are orphans from impoverished Indian villages.

THEY URGENTLY NEED A SPONSOR.

Help Free the Children is a New Zealand Government recognised Charitable Trust committed to rescuing children from a life of hard labour, poverty and abuse. We work with local community projects, volunteers help to keep overheads to a minimum, and funding goes directly to the project.

In the villages of the land-less and illiterate in Bihar there are very few old people. Life breaking poverty forces children from the age of six to work in quarries and brickworks for about 65 cents a day. Families could not survive without contributions from their children’s labour. Quarrying involves crushing rock, producing dust that causes such respiratory ailments as silicosis, asthma and TB. Add to that malnutrition and other illnesses and they die at an early age, unable to afford medical treatment. Most do not reach the age of 40.

Here is Sundhir’s story. Sundhir comes from a remote rural village in Bihar. His Father developed tuberculosis. The family was too poor to afford medical treatment. Dad died when Sundhir was three. Sundhir’s mother left him with relatives while she worked, but they could not manage the extra burden.

Sundhir’s story is all too common. Abandoned orphans often walk until they reach the nearest town or city, and there they scavenge and beg for food. Wearing only thin ragged clothing, street children are forced to sleep outdoors in the bitter cold of winter. The girls are frequently abused by townsmen.

Sundhir is just one of the many orphans in Bihar. But help is available through the Niranjana Public Welfare Trust Orphanage. Help Free the Children arranges sponsorship support for abandoned children in this orphanage. Sundhir is an intelligent boy, always eager to learn. At the Niranjana Orphanage, children like Sundhir receive loving care in a sheltered hostel. They are given three nourishing meals a day, clothing, healthcare and quality education.
